What exactly is spirit and what does your spirit long for?
My spirit longs
freedom to unfold,
unfurl, to fly,
release, roam free,
break through,
it longs
for luminous heights
It craves for joy,
it desires peace,
it yearns for beauty,
light and happiness
refinement, nobility
and lightness.
My spirit longs
for clarity
Oh! for some purity,
grace, warmth
and yes, peace.
My spirit longs
for harmony
and cleanliness
childlikeness,
charity and genuineness
It longs for patience,
modesty and faithfulness,
to become humble,
useful, virtuous
and harmless
To end the immobility
and indolence
come fully awake,
active find the truth
and become a bridge
to lighter realms,
to hope and trust
in love and justice
become part
of a community
of joyful activity
My spirit longs
the freedom
to sing melodious
songs with heartfelt
gratitude and reverence
Oh! my spirit longs
to find the Will
in Creation
so I can follow,
to find the Love
so I can love.
To find my way

Simply put, the spirit is the inner person, that part of oneself that we sense never ages, that remains evergreen throughout one's life. The spirit outlives the earthly body, and the soul, it is the real person that has the possibility to make it to the Paradise of the human spirit. In an ideal world the spirit should be in control of our intellect and the rest of the earthly body, and other cloaks making up the soul, making decisions, taking charge, developing spiritually, being human.
You are not a bad person because you do not consciously go out of your way to harm anyone but then you also do not intentionally help or uplift either.
Perhaps you can be called a decent human being, you obey all the laws of your country, you pay your bills right on time, pay your taxes, you are an exemplary citizen. However, you have no belief as such, no religious belief, no spiritual conviction, you do not believe in anything that can not be experienced with the five senses that cannot be proved by science, you do not see the point. Maybe you vaguely believe in something up there which you were born to believe is called God.
You are a good person and you do go to a place of worship diligently every week, making your financial contributions, and that's it. You stay away from all other activity not wanting to be roped into some project that could take some of your precious time and involve you deeper than you are willing to go. You have always flown under the radar but you strongly feel it is time to become more personally responsible for the affairs of those unrelated persons around you and beyond.
Or you go to a place of worship regularly, organizing, attending and participating in all the affairs of the place from Temple, Altar or Mosque duties to administrative duties. Before now you had believed that when you pass on you will be conducted joyously to Heaven where you will be welcomed and rewarded for your good works with anything from a golden mansion where you can sleep and rest forever in peace, to a harem of women for your eternal pleasure. Now, now there is that niggling growing doubt that this may not be true after all. An inner urgency drives you to seek for the truth.
Maybe you identify as a non-religious but spiritual person who believes in God but that's it. You do not pursue the subject any further and would not even know from where to begin to do so.
Although you sometimes long for some deeper meaning to life, you feel lost in a hazy, fleeting, twilight, shadowy, wispy world with no depth, anchor, hold or lasting values. You seek for a sanctuary of light and freedom but you feel trapped in a world that is rapidly descending ever faster into darkness and carrying you with it.
You long to break free from the heavy, invisible shackles of ever evolving human habits and opinions holding you down, to smash through the oppressive walls of spiritual ignorance, distorted beliefs and laziness, cut through the heavy nets of lethargy and escape to freedom and light!
You feel misunderstood and lack understanding for the world around you and its ways and you can't seem to find a niche. You long to gain the strength, vitality and zeal to break free, unleash, live and give of your true life trapped within, whilst you still can!
You yearn for the above, you seek Truth and Light in order to find supreme bliss but how and where can you find the strength to break free in order to attain that inner calm, peace and stability needed to have a chance of finding this in the midst of all the tension and troubles of life?
